Dear Mr. Torben Andersen,
We are ready to help Microsoft Corporation to improve its software for
better conformance with the needs of Lithuanian users especially to
achieve the greatest conformance with Lithuanian standards and laws.
Let us inform you, that February 1, 2000 the international standard
ISO/IEC 8859-13 Information technology - 8-bit single-byte coded graphic
character sets - Part 13: Latin alphabet No. 7 have been approved as
Lithuanian standard. The charset ISO-8859-13 is registered in IANA:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/character-sets.
Unfortunately, outdated charset ISO-8859-4 is still assigned to
Lithuania in Microsoft electronic mail software(see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/ref
erence/charsets/charset4.asp
).
We ask you to make all necessary corrections in all existing software as
well as in the new software.
In order to make software acceptable for Lithuanian user it is
necessary:
1. To build-in charset ISO-8859-13 in all Microsoft electronic mail
programs and set it as default for Lithuanian regional setting.
2. To correct error in Microsoft Outlook 2000. Current version of this
program unable to accept read messages encoded in standard ISO-8859-13.
3. To correct error in Outlook Express 6. The user is forced to do extra
actions View /Encoding / Baltic (Windows) in order to read message in
standard encoding ISO-8859-13 in the current version of this program.
4. Add the charset ISO-8859-13 to the list of charsets of the mail
server
Microsoft Exchange.
Let us inform you that charset ISO-8859-13 is supported in the following
electronic mail client programs for Windows: Mozilla, Netscape, Opera,
Forté Agent, Pegasus Mail (by add-on) and for Linux: Mutt, Balsa, Kmail,
Evolution, Sylpheed, for MAC OS: Eudora.
We are looking forward to your support.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
